Heading westward from Ottawa on highway 417 will eventually, after approximately 25 minutes of leisurely driving, bring the casual Sunday driven or visiting American tourist to a partially obscured entrance to a dead end road. However, if curiosity did prevail and one did, albeit reluctantly, go through the gates, they would be surprised at what was secreted away behind, ad hinted at, by the aforementioned, self-effacing plaque. Throughout the inevitable Soviet barrage, these privileged VIPs would be saved from the missiles themselves., while afterward, the impenetrable concrete walls would insulate them against the consequent fallout and ensuing nuclear radiation. From their safe haven, the prime minister and other government dignitaries could advise Canadian survivors, pre-supposing there be any Canadian survivors on the means for gathering their scattered wits about them, getting back on their feet and beginning the necessary task of reconstructing the country. To America’s charging, Canadian tourist flock to Cuba’s shores each year to enjoy the shopping opportunities that the variance between the two nations currencies provides. The Diefenbunker, which was once regarded as an asylum by the chosen few and an act of government betrayal by the multitudes, is now only a historical landmark visited by history buffs and off-the-beaten-track tourists.
